A Gap in the Trees is a feature-length environmental documentary about two searchers of the possibly-extinct ivory-billed woodpecker who go on a harrowing and amazing journey. The film explores the history of forestry in Louisiana and how the drastic changes to the state’s landscape contributed to the diminishing of the great woodpecker. The film dives deep into the controversial subject of the ivory-billed woodpecker’s survival to explore the answers to several key questions:

  • If the bird is indeed extinct, is the persistent interest in it actually distracting from more meaningful environmental action?

  • Conversely, can a possiblty extinct bird still be used to leverage land protections if enough people believe it still exists?

  • Lastly, does engagement with the very enigma of the bird connect people to environments? And is that meaningful in and of itself?

The production is seeking $23,000 in completion funds to support post-production and two final filming sessions.
